The Project
The Bahamas is a nation of islands with 95% of its territory underwater. The economy, livelihoods, and culture of the people of the Bahamas are inextricably linked to ocean health. The Bahamas Reef Environmental Educational Foundation (BREEF) is dedicated to educating Bahamians and visitors about protecting the coral reefs that protect the Bahamas and proudly reaches over 3,500 students a year through their education programs.
This grant supported the installation of solar panels and a battery on BREEF's new electric vehicle-powered mobile outdoor classroom. Educational resources on marine biodiversity and conservation, renewable energy and sustainable development will be delivered aboard the mobile classroom to local schools and field study sites across New Providence, through BREEF’s “Young Reporters for the Environment: Giving our Marine Environment a Voice” project.
What They Are Saying
“As an archipelago, The Bahamas is dependent on a healthy ocean that sustains lives and livelihoods. BREEF’s Young Reporters for the Environment helps inspire young people to become active stewards of the waters around us and active participants in the sustainable Blue Economy. This new electric vehicle allows us to not only take students to the ocean, but bring the ocean to students."
