The Project
Since its founding in 1984, Sherman Heights Community Center (SHCC) has been a vital resource for approximately 20,000 residents annually, providing essential services in Sherman Heights and neighboring communities like Grant Hill, Logan Heights, and San Ysidro. The solar installation reflects SHCC's commitment to sustainability and its mission to foster community through education, cultural enrichment, and personal development. SHCC promotes educational, health, personal development, and arts and cultural programs that enhance the well-being of individuals and families in these predominately Mexican-American communities.
We are proud to have partnered with Hammond Climate Solutions Foundation as they guided this solar and storage project at Sherman Heights Community Center to completion. Hammond Climate Solutions played a pivotal role, leading the project from concept to reality, ensuring it met its sustainability and community impact goals.
The solar and storage system at SHCC is projected to offset 99.6% of the center's energy usage, generating substantial cost savings—over $400,000 throughout the system's lifetime. These savings will be reinvested directly into the center’s diverse programming, including after-school enrichment, arts and culture celebrations, workforce development, health and wellness programs, and senior services. Additionally, the system will significantly reduce carbon emissions, aligning with our shared goals of environmental stewardship and supporting resilient, sustainable communities.
Beyond the financial and environmental benefits, this project serves as a model for clean energy education and workforce development. By partnering with Aloha Solar Power and IBEW 569, the project is not only providing local union jobs but also offering on-the-job training for apprentices, helping build the next generation of green energy professionals. We are honored to play a role in this impactful initiative, which will continue to uplift the Sherman Heights community for years to come.
