The Project

Casa Familiar is the leading service and community development organization in the border community of San Ysidro, providing over 40 bilingual programs and services at six different sites in the community. SunForAll financing funded a solar installation at Casa Familiar's new development, Living Rooms at The Border.

Living Rooms at the Border is a mixed-use project in the historic heart of San Ysidro. This economic development project contains 10 units of affordable housing and is less than one mile from the U.S.-Mexico Border and includes expansion space for Casa Familiar’s immigration services and the El K-Fe Barista Youth Training Program as well as common space for theater/community events. The project also includes the restoration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, built in 1927, and its transformation into the El Salon multi-media theatre performing space in partnership with Teatro Máscara Mágica. Building solar on the rooftop of Living Rooms at the Border allows residents to benefit from solar savings and also helps Casa Familiar save money on their operations.
